INFERTILITY ASSESSMENT
Infertility is defined as the inability to fall pregnant despite having frequent sex for at least a year for most couple.
The infertility issue may lie with either you or your partner, or may be the result of a combination of factors. But as with any other medical issue, we must first understand the cause before we can begin to solve the problem. The three main reasons for lack of conception include:
  • A woman not ovulating regularly.
  • Damage to the fallopian tubes, preventing the sperm from reaching the egg.
  • Sperm that is unable to fertilise the egg.
  • Problems with ovulation are at the root of most cases of female infertility.
  • Signs that a woman may not be ovulating normally include irregular or absent menstrual periods.
Common causes of ovulation problems:
  • Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS), the most common cause of female infertility, when a hormone imbalance interferes with normal ovulation.
  • Primary Ovarian Insufficiency (POI): Not the same as early menopause, this occurs when a woman’s ovaries stop working normally before age 40.
Less common causes of fertility problems in woman are:
  • Blocked fallopian tubes as a result of inflammatory disease, endometriosis or surgery for an ectopic pregnancy.
  • Physical problems with the uterus.
  • Uterine fibroids, which are non-cancerous clumps of tissue and muscle on the walls of the uterus.
The most common causes of infertility in men are:
  • A woman not ovulating regularly.
  • Damage to the fallopian tubes, preventing the sperm from reaching the egg.
  • Sperm that is unable to fertilise the egg.
  • We conduct the relevant tests for each of these possibilities, via blood tests, laparoscopy or semen analysis, to identify the cause.
