We were delighted to sit down with Jen, to find out more:
What is the most challenging & rewarding part of your job?
Working with couples battling infertility has really become my passion and I can’t imagine working in another nursing field again.
The most rewarding part of my job is the successful delivery of a baby we helped create. I love getting pictures and birth stories from my patients.
The most challenging aspect of my job is finding the balance between empathy, understanding, reality and hope. I try to combine these aspects in my approach with patients to give them a rounded-out view of their journey and treatment; however, it’s always heartbreaking to receive a negative pregnancy test.
Do you have any Qualifications / Personal Achievements you are most proud of?
I have a BCur degree with honours from the University of Johannesburg. I qualified in 2007 with distinction in Midwifery and Psychiatry. I’ve completed numerous trauma and advanced life-support courses during my career; trauma and emergency nursing was a big passion of mine in my younger nursing years.
My community service was spent at Charlotte Mxakeke in Johannesburg doing a paediatric rotation in trauma, surgical, neonatal and orthopaedic units.
What patients may not know about you is that you are extremely creative – tell us more?
I love being creative! My creative outlet is usually in the form of planning my children’s birthday parties – I tend to go completely overboard with the details. Lockdown in March put a very sharp end to my plans for my daughters 1st birthday party. Luckily I made up for it with my son’s party in September.
I love to bake and find pottery-painting incredibly therapeutic.
What else do you enjoy doing outside of work?
Spending quality time with my husband and children has become a big priority for me in this fast-paced world we find ourselves in.
As much as I’m a homebody, I equally love hopping in the car and going on a little road-trip for breakfast or an ice-cream. I love plant/home décor shopping and it brings me great joy seeing my interior design ideas come to life.
Favourite destination?
I can’t pick just one! But if I had to choose, London will always have a special place in my heart. Koh Samui in Thailand is definitely on the top of my favourite list too. I have to mention ‘The Algarve’ in Portugal too – as it holds very dear memories for me.
What are your guilty pleasures?
True Crime podcasts – I’m addicted. Hmmm… not to mention The Creamery ice-cream and a fine glass of wine.
What quote resonates most with you?
Gosh, I have so many. However, my favourite right now is: “Not all storms come to disrupt your life, some come to clear your path”.
